There are 4 papers in total – Paper 1 (Writing), Paper 2 (Language Use and Comprehension), Paper 3 (Listening Comprehension), and Paper 4 (Oral Communication).

  2. Given the context of a situation, candidates are required to write a short response
  3. (e.g. letter, email, report), bearing in mind the purpose and audience.
  4. Continuous Writing (40m)
  5. Given a topic and three relevant pictures, candidates are required to write a composition of at least 150 words in continuous prose.

  1. Candidates will be tested on whether they are able to use language correctly and comprehend visual and textual information.

    • Visual Text Comprehension (8m)

    Booklet B: (Open-ended 67m)

    • Grammar Cloze (10m)
    • Editing for Spelling and Grammar (12m)
    • Comprehension Cloze (15m)
    • Synthesis & Transformation (10m)
    • Comprehension Open-Ended (20m)

Listening Comprehension

  1. There will be 20 multiple-choice questions which assess candidates’ ability to understand spoken English. (20m)

     

    The texts can take on many forms:

    • news items
    • announcements
    • advertisements
    • instructions
    • explanations
    • conversations
    • speeches
    • stories

     

    Graphic representations will be used for the first seven items.

Oral Communication

  1. Reading aloud (10m)

    Given a passage to read, candidates are assessed on their ability to pronounce and articulate words clearly, to read fluently with appropriate expression and rhythm. 

     

    Stimulus-based Conversation (20m)

    Given a visual stimulus, candidates are assessed on their ability to give a personal response and engage in a conversation on a relevant topic.
