The Secret Formula to Writing a Perfect Composition

Writing is one of the most important aspects of the English language, and it can be difficult to get it right. For the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE), paper 1 writing takes up a huge 27.5% of the entire English grade. Clearly, it is important for one to have good language and writing schools to ace the English paper. How then do you go about communicating your thoughts in pen and paper eloquently? One of the most important things to do when writing a composition is to brainstorm. This means that you should write down whatever comes to mind after reading the question, and then try to organize your thoughts into a coherent order. This will help you to develop a thesis statement and to structure your essay. What is crucial is that you identify the key words in the question correctly so that your composition is relevant. For example,  if the question is ‘Write about an unfair situation’, then the key word to focus on would be ‘unfair’. You have to write about an event that you felt was unfair and unjust, and not just any event.

Once you have a good understanding of what the question is asking, you can start to write your composition. It is important to remember that there is no one right way to write a composition, but there are some general guidelines that you can follow. First, make sure that your introduction captures the reader’s attention and gives them an idea of what your compo will be about. Next, develop your storyline in the body of the composition. Finally, conclude your essay by summing up your main points and leaving the reader with something to think about.

Another important thing to keep in mind when writing is clarity. Make sure your sentences are easy to understand, and that your points are clear. You don’t want your readers to be confused by what you are trying to say.

For each body paragraph, it is always recommended that students follow the PEEL format – Point, Example, Explanation and Link. This will ensure that your composition flows smoothly and the marker is able to understand your thoughts clearly and see things from your point of view to give higher grades.

Finally, be sure to use interesting and descriptive language. Don’t just write things because they are true – make them sound interesting too! This will help to engage your readers and keep them interested in what you have to say. For example,  instead of saying ‘I walked to the store’, you could say ‘I strolled down the street to the store’. Another example would be to use more specific words instead of general ones. Instead of saying ‘I ate breakfast’, you could say ‘I devoured a stack of pancakes for breakfast’.

Remember to leave some time for double checking of your script! Make sure that your grammar and punctuation are accurate, and there are no spelling mistakes. For homework, it is always a good idea to have someone else read your work as well, in order to get a second opinion. This can also help to catch any errors that you may have missed.

By following these simple tips, you can be sure to write an impressive composition that will stand out from the rest. So don’t be discouraged – with a little hard work and practice, you’ll be getting the highest marks in no time!
